Experts share benchmarks with the New York Times

4 ways we will know it’s time for America to reopen

The New York Times’ Upshot has a great article from writer and professor of pediatrics Aaron E. Carroll, who asked experts for possible benchmarks that can guide decision-making on when shelter orders can relax. Here’s what’s recommended:

1. Hospitals in the state must be able to safely treat all patients requiring hospitalization, without resorting to crisis standards of care.
2. A state needs to be able to test at least everyone who has symptoms.
3. The state is able to conduct monitoring of confirmed cases and contacts.
4. There must be a sustained reduction in cases for at least 14 days.
